Volunteers Help Arson Watch Board-Up Event 10-01-2010

About 100 volunteers came out Friday morning to participate in the Saginaw Arson Watch board-up event.
Organizers said crews will board up 100 vacant homes in hopes of curbing arson fires during the nights surrounding Halloween.
Beside abandoned buildings being a hotspot for arsonists, volunteers said they’re also an eyesore and a threat to everyone’s safety.
"Our program has made a huge difference," Saginaw Arson Watch founder Marcia Rabideau said. "We've boarded up over 400 homes since we started, which has helped reduce the number of fires."
According to the FBI, 155 arson fires were reported in Saginaw last year, down from 234 the year before.
Local businesses contributed $3,000 worth of materials for the house boarding project.
Saginaw Arson Watch is now in its fourth year of existence.
