Jury Reaches Verdict In Midland Murder Trial 10-04-2010

A jury returned with a verdict after hearing closing arguments Monday in the case of a 28-year-old Midland man accused of stabbing his girlfriend to death in an apartment last year.
Cody Douglas Nelson was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Megan Alexandra Walters, 22.
It took the jury two hours and fifteen minutes to arrive at the verdict. Nelson didn't show any emotion as it was read out loud. Family members of both the victim and Nelson cried when the verdict was delivered.

Midland County prosecutors argued that Nelson had been in a three-year relationship with his girlfriend and that the couple often argued.
Prosecutor Mike Carpenter said he was grateful for the first-degree murder conviction.
"There were a lot of facts and details the jury had to take into consideration," said Carpenter. "It was a long trial and my heart goes out to both families."
Walters was found dead Dec. 9, 2009, inside her Woodland Place Apartment at 4512 N. Saginaw, after police were dispatched to check on her well-being.
Nelson was arrested by Midland police after he checked himself into Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland the same day.
The two were sharing an apartment and dating at the time of the killing, police said.
Nelson will be sentenced on Nov. 18. A first-degree murder conviction in Michigan means life in prison with no chance for parole.
