Saginaw County Tobacco, Alcohol Sting Nets 57 10-13-2010

Saginaw County Sheriff William L. Federspiel held a news conference Wednesday morning to provide more details on a recently executed alcohol and tobacco compliance sting.
The Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office said 262 stores and restaurants were checked for illegal distribution of alcohol and tobacco products to minors by the use of decoys. The decoys were minors between the ages of 17 and 19.
The stores and restaurants checked were primarily located in the target areas of: Saginaw City, Saginaw Township and Thomas Township, according to a news release.
During the compliance checks, 57 violations were found. Of the 57 violations, 40 consisted of alcohol violations, while the remaining 17 were tobacco violations.
The sting began on Aug. 12 and is ongoing.
"It appears that the Alcohol and Tobacco Compliance Program has been effective in reducing the number of violations by issuing citations and providing educational tools to help reduce sales to minors," Federspiel said.
Federspiel said store clerks were issued a citation and the violation and store information was then forwarded to the Liquor Control Commission for further review.
The Saginaw County Sheriff’s Office then mailed each store in violation an educational packet containing information regrading the prevention of alcohol sales to minors.
Thirty-two of the store locations that had committed a violation were then re-checked, in which none of them committed a second violation, Federspiel said.
The Alcohol and Tobacco Compliance Program is part of a partnership with the Saginaw County Health Department.
