Ex-Coach Gets 15 Years In Teen Sex Case 10-18-2010

A former Owendale-Gagetown softball coach convicted of having a sexual relationship with an underage athlete was sentenced to a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Cory D. Fritz, 27, of Sebewaing, was convicted in August by a jury of 11 women and one man of five counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a 14-year-old female athlete.
On Monday, Tuscola County Circuit Judge Patrick R. Joslyn sentenced Fritz to 10-15 years on each count -- to be served concurrently.
The sexual encounters occurred between October 2005 and March 2006 in the Village of Gagetown, according to TV5 reports.
Investigators have also alleged Fritz fathered a child with the teen, who delivered the baby in June 2006, two months prematurely. Although, neither Fritz nor the student, who is now 19 years old, have been charged in connection with the death of the child.
"Look at all the harm that's flowed from day one of this," said Tuscola County Prosecutor Mark Reene. "The impact that it had on a school, the impact it had on other teammates, as the court alluded too, the baby -- all these circumstances. This is exactly why you don't want to have somebody his age engaging in this type of behavior with someone her age."
Frirtz's attorney Kevin Rieman said he will request a new sentencing hearing and a new trial.
"We're asking Judge Joslyen to consider some thing's that happened and make a decision that Mr. Fritz didn't get a fair trial," said Rieman. "If that's denied, the next issue would be looking at whether or not you as the Court of Appeals to overturn the trial results and send it back for a new trial."
