Local Students Participate In Youth Symposium 10-18-2010

Eight Saginaw-area Hispanic high school students took part in the sixth annual Virginia Hispanic Youth Symposium, a four-day college access program hosted by the Hispanic College Fund at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia.
The Dow Corning Foundation sponsored all eight students, providing airfare, lodging and registration for the symposium.
Nearly 250 Hispanic students from across the country gathered at VSU for the event earlier this summer.
“The Dow Corning Foundation is a proud sponsor of these eight outstanding students from the Saginaw area,” said Kimberly Houston-Philpot, president of the Dow Corning Foundation. “Our hope is that these students apply the lessons they learned in Virginia to their lives here in the Great Lakes Bay Region and realize they too can achieve a college education, pursue a professional career, and invest in our community as volunteers and leaders.”
Student attendees, who were selected from an admissions pool of more than 700 applicants, focused on learning strategies for success related to college, career and community service through a number of workshops.
Dow Corning led one of the career workshops featuring chemistry, which included a demonstration of making a silicone-based hand lotion using Dow Corning silicones.
At the conclusion of the symposium, VSU President Dr. Keith Miller offered a summary of the symposium and noted the positive affect the program had on not only the attendees but on himself.
He offered all participants a full scholarship should they apply and be accepted at VSU.
