District's Grading System Draws Mixed Reviews 10-20-2010

Right now parents in Bay County are still cooling off after a heated meeting with school officials in Bangor Township on Tuesday night.
Under a pilot program at the middle and high schools, students are now graded through a standards-based learning system.
Administrators said that the system ensures students really absorb what's taught and are not just given grades.
But parents claim college scholarships are in jeopardy for some former honor roll students.
"I do understand that change is difficult for a lot of parents and I just hope that they realize that we're doing what's in the best interest of their students," said John Glenn High School Assistant Principal Susan Gillings. "We want them to be proficient on the areas that Michigan says they have to be proficient."
School officials couldn't get to every question at the meeting and said they would respond to comments on the district's web site.
No responses are posted as of the noon hour.
