After Months, East Genesee Avenue Now Open 10-25-2010

A $5 million construction project in downtown Saginaw is finally wrapping up after numerous bumps and setbacks.
Crews have worked throughout the summer and fall to a finish the overhaul on East Genesee Avenue -- and on Monday it was open for traffic.
“The project is probably about 99 percent completed,” said Saginaw Traffic Engineering Administrator Phil Karwat. “We have some issues that we are still trying to take care of.”
The roadway has undergone major street, sewer and water main construction. The redevelopment also included new sidewalks, lamp posts and landscaping.
The project, which began in March, extends from North Washington to Janes.
According to city officials, the improvements will help with Saginaw's revitalizing efforts, despite going about $300,000 over budget.
The newly reconstructed road was also featured in the October issue of Roads and Bridges Magazine as one of the Top 10 Road Projects in the country. It finished at the No. 5 spot.
About 15,000-20,000 vehicles travel this east-west roadway daily,
