Gov. Touts Wind Turbine Component Production 10-29-2010

Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm was in Buena Vista Township and Flint on Friday to attend two events.
The governor visited Merrill Technologies Group, at 1375 S. 25th St., to celebrate the first utility-scale wind turbine to be manufactured and assembled in Michigan.
Merrill Technologies Group and its customer, Northern Power Systems of Barre, Vt., presented the wind turbine to the governor at the 11 a.m. event.
“We’re very hopeful that this will be a game changer for this area in the same way much of the solar work has been so promising here,” said Granholm.
After the unveiling, the turbine will be shipped to Stoney Corners near Cadillac to begin producing energy for more than 250 homes for Detroit Edison.
The event also honored the Michigan companies who supplied materials for Merrill's manufacturing process. The top 25 Michigan manufacturers and suppliers were recognized as a "Celebration of Michigan Manufacturing."
The governor also traveled to Flint to speak at the Flint Center of Energy Excellence's Biogas Summit.

JUST IN: U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu issued the following statement on Friday’s unveiling by Merrill Technologies Group and Northern Power Systems of the first-ever utility-scale wind turbine manufactured and assembled in Michigan.
“Today’s announcement in Saginaw shows what’s possible when the public and private sector come together to invest in the next generation of U.S manufacturing,” said Secretary Chu. “These investments under the Recovery Act are helping to ensure that Michigan stays at the forefront of America’s clean energy economy for years to come.”
