Voters Eye Constitution, Banning Felon Measures 11-02-2010

LANSING, Mich.

Michigan voters will decide Tuesday whether to begin a major overhaul of the state constitution.

The first proposal on Tuesday's statewide ballot would authorize the calling of a convention to rewrite the Michigan constitution adopted in 1963. Similar proposals failed in 1978 and 1994.

If a convention is authorized, voters would later be asked to approve the revamped constitution.

The second proposal asks voters if they want to ban public officials who commit certain felonies connected to their government jobs from holding office for 20 years.

The measure was placed on the ballot after high-profile scandals involving former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and former Detroit city councilwoman Monica Conyers.
