Governor's Race About Who Can Fix Michigan 11-02-2010

Michigan voters are dealing with a state economy that began declining earlier and sank deeper than any other in the nation.

On Tuesday, they are choosing their next governor, selecting the candidate they thought best equipped to ease the crisis.

The Republican nominee and front-runner is Rick Snyder is a businessman who kicked off his campaign with a Super Bowl ad in which he declared himself "one tough nerd."

His Democratic opponent is Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, who is fighting to stage a surprise win with his pro-middle class agenda.

Three third-party candidates also are running.

Tuesday marks the first gubernatorial race in eight years with no incumbent and the first since the Michigan economy was rocked by the near-collapse of two automakers.

Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land estimates about 3.8 million voters across the state will cast a ballot, 52 percent of Michigan's 7.3 million registered voters.
