Construction Tool Sparked Bay City Hall Roof Fire 11-02-2010

Officials in Bay City released the findings Tuesday of their investigation into the fire that burned part of the fourth floor of City Hall on Oct. 12.
Authorities said that -- as previously reported -- the fire was accidental.
City officials said the fire was caused by a construction worker from the roofing company installing new tiles on the 100-plus-year-old structure.
The man was using a grinder to grind off bolt heads holding a metal “L” bracket to a cement ledge, said authorities.
Fire investigators said sparks from the grinder caused the fire and the fire smoldered for about 40 minutes before a problem was noticed.
Due to the fire, 13 sprinkler heads were activated and an estimated 20,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire.
A total of 10 fire departments responded to the initial fire call.
No reopening date was given for City Hall.
