Down By 28 Votes, Candidate Requests Recount 11-11-2010

State Rep. Terry Brown, D-Pigeon, said Thursday that he will request an official recount of the votes cast in the Nov. 2 election.
“In light of the circumstances, I believe that moving forward with a recount is the right thing to do so we can make sure that voters have confidence in our electoral process, which is the very foundation of our democracy,” Brown said. “The recount process is the only way to find out whether any mistakes were made despite the diligence of poll workers and election officials and, if so, to correct those errors so they can be avoided in the future.”
Brown said he has been encouraged to request a recount based on initial confusion over whether he or Republican Kurt Damrow won Tuscola County.
Ultimately, official results showed that while Brown won Huron County, Damrow won Tuscola and took the 84th District House seat by 28 votes out of 30,334 cast.
“I think folks can understand wanting to do the recount to make sure each vote was counted properly, with the confusion on election night and the margin being less than one-tenth of one percent,” said Brown, who is in his second term serving the residents of Huron and Tuscola counties.
Once both counties certify the results, the Board of State Canvassers must certify the election by Nov. 22. Brown will then have the opportunity to formally request a recount.
