Area Pharmacies Shut Down After Raid By Feds 11-11-2010

The Kentwood pharmacy chain declared bankruptcy right after federal agents raided Kentwood’s parent company in Grand Rapids and other Kentwood drugstores around the state, including stores in St. Louis and Alma.
Federal officials accused the owner of repackaging old drugs and redistributing them, and while it is not clear if that practice took place at their St. Louis location, it has left the town without an apothecary.
The Downtown Development Authority in St. Louis is trying to get another pharmacy to move into the old store because not only is this a major inconvenience to those who live here, but because a drug store is a major draw for the downtown area.
On Thursday, the pharmacist at the Kentwood store was transferring patients’ prescriptions to other locations, and while patients looked for another store, the town of St. Louis is looking for another pharmacy.
The state has also warned nursing homes that may have received any medications from any of the Kentwood pharmacies not to use them.
WOOD in Grand Rapids reported Thursday that the chain filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection.
