Tough Questions: Water Bill Soaks Local Couple 11-12-2010

SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. -- A local couple is searching for answers after finding they were charged for water they say they’ve never used.
The couple lives in Birch Run Township and told WNEM TV5 the problem began after the township installed new electronic water meters.
Bill and Teresa Finkbeiner say they’re being charged nearly $2,000 for using 29,000 gallons of water over a three-month period. The couple says they average 8,000 gallons in the same time frame and usually pay about $80.
Despite talks with local officials, they say nothing is being done to figure out what’s going on with their outlandish water bill.
Following WNEM TV5's initial report, we took our Tough Question straight to township officials on behalf of the Finkbeiner's.
Township Supervisor Kurt Kiessling declined to talk with TV5 on camera, but said residents could be seeing higher water bills becuase the new meters are more accurate.
The Finkbeiner's say they don't buy it.
Residents in the village of Birch Run also contacted TV5, but no one from the village was available for comment.
