Flint's Bikes On The Bricks Adds Another Day 11-15-2010

The ride just got a little longer.
Bikes on the Bricks Committee of the Flint Area Convention & Visitors Bureau held a news conference Monday morning to announce the addition of another day to the formerly two-day motorcycle festival on the bricks of downtown Flint.
Starting in 2011, Bikes on the Bricks will be a full weekend of fun for bikers from across the state.
The event will be held Sept. 23-25 in downtown Flint.
Tanya Lane, events coordinator for the FACVB, said the growth of Bikes on the Bricks mirrors, to some extent, the success of Flint and Genesee County’s largest summertime event, Back to the Bricks.
The elder of the two brick-themed attractions has transitioned from a day-long car show when it began in 2005 to a five-day festival ranked among the top 20 in the United States.
“We’ve experienced tremendous growth in both events,” Lane said. “The community has been very supportive of them and, for that reason, we expect continued expansion and new pathways to partnerships in the future.”
Members of the committee also used the news conference to announce gifts totaling nearly $7,000 to three local good-will organizations: Friends of the Flint Police, the Flint Police Activities League and the Old Newsboys of Flint.
The funds were gathered from the sale of wristbands for the police-escorted ride during the 2010 Bikes on the Bricks festival and from the sale of T-shirts for the Police Motorcycle Skills Competition.
“We have been fortunate to be a part of such a great event for this community and we are honored to receive such a generous gift,” said Sgt. Rick Besson, who represents Friends of the Flint Police. “As the event continues to grow, we hope that its impact on the local economy and on local service organizations will be even broader.”
