Tough Questions: Class Lacks Full-Time Teacher 11-16-2010

Students at one Saginaw school have yet to meet their permanent teacher.
Since the first day of school, fifth-grade students at Merrill Park Elementary have been instructed by three different substitute teachers.
Christina Garcia said the lack of a full-time teacher is having a negative impact on her son’s academic performance.
“When I send my kids to school -- I send them to learn,” Garcia said. “My son is failing and it’s already halfway through the year. Nobody has called me, sent a letter or notified me of this.”
School officials told WNEM TV5 the regular full-time teacher is on leave and they’ve been searching for a qualified substitute. They also said that one of the substitute teachers died.
Garcia’s son does take responsibility for the poor grades and admits there were times he didn’t do his homework. But an unstable setting in the classroom certainly doesn’t spell success, according to Garcia, even if all of the students are not failing.
“There are some of them that are not failing,” she said. “But there are kids that need to pushed more than others.”
Garcia also questioned whether classes at Merrill Park were overcrowded. But a district spokeswoman told WNEM TV5 that all classes there are under the teachers’ contractual maximum of 31 students.
School officials said they are working to resolve in the inconsistency in the classroom.
