Kids Step In To Help Struggling Animal Shelter 11-19-2010

MIDLAND, Mich. With the Midland County Animal Shelter in danger of shutting down, some local school kids are stepping up to lend a helping hand.
The Humane Society is trying to raise enough money to take over the shelter, and with the help of some local students, the organization is getting closer to reaching its goal.
The students assisting at the shelter are learning about animals, but they could teach the rest the public a lesson about generosity. Jefferson Middle School raised $3,120 for the Midland County Humane Society.
The organization is trying to take over the animal shelter and to do that, it needs $120,000.
“I knew that we really needed the funds, otherwise Midland County Animal Control would close and there would be nowhere for the abandoned animals to go,” said student MacKenna Greene.
Greene desperately wanted to help and she asked a school counselor if her classmates could start a fundraiser.
“It's from one student's idea, but it's the whole student body that took hold of the idea and ran with it, so that's how we were able to raise so much money,” said school counselor Roxanne Weisend.
Counting the $3,120 check, the Humane Society is now at the $90,000 mark, but the group still needs more money to help save dozens of animals.
“We're two-thirds of the way there and we've still got a month and a half to go, so we're going to do it somehow,” said Neil Wackerle, president of the Midland County Humane Society.
It isn't surprising to find out Greene wants to be a veterinarian, and she has a challenge for all the other animal lovers out there.
“I would say, ‘You should definitely do this; it's an amazing feeling to be able to help the animals,’” Greene said.
The Humane Society has until Jan. 1 to raise those additional funds. For more information on how you can help, click here to visit their website.
