County Board Balances Budget With Job Cuts 11-23-2010

There’s a new budget in place in Bay County tonight, but to fill a $1.5 million hole, Bay County commissioners turned to pink slips.
It took leaders three hours to hammer out the financial plan. The county commission cut $600,000 out of the budget, and the rest will be made up by dipping into savings.
The final budget passed with six votes in favor and three opposed.
“It’s a sad day, there have been a lot of tears shed,” said Vicki Roupe, the Bay County register of deeds. “It’s heartbreaking. We work well together. I have an ideal staff. When you see people losing their jobs during the holidays, it’s very difficult.”
The register of deeds office has five employees; two will receive layoff notices.
One commissioner proposed giving up commission health care benefits in an effort to save jobs.
The board also voted to eliminate health care for all incoming county commissioners, but current commissioners will get to keep theirs.
The Bay County executive said he would be proposing another $400,000 in cuts, possibly cutting the Bay County television channel and the county pool.
