Postal Service May Cut Jobs; Public Meeting Set 11-29-2010

On Tuesday a public meeting will be held to discuss the transfer of mail processing operations from Saginaw Processing and Distribution Center to the Metroplex plant located in Pontiac.
The U.S. Postal Service recently conducted a study that could affect about 200 regional jobs and increase average delivery time of mail.
Officials said the reason for the study is to determine whether consolidation of mail processing operations will help eliminate excess capacity and make more efficient use of facility space, staffing, equipment and transportation.
Tuesday’s meeting will share the initial results of the study and allow members of the community to ask questions and provide feedback. The meeting will be held at Saginaw Valley State University from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
Official said community input will be considered before a decision is made as to whether or not the proposed consolidation should be implemented.
In September, employees held an informational picket at the 1233 S. Washington office -- where most of the process employees whose jobs are on the line work.
The study's recommendation could come by the beginning of the new year.
