Lawmakers Set To Distribute $246M To Schools 12-01-2010

LANSING, Mich.Michigan lawmakers are approving a plan to distribute $246 million in federal money to schools.
The proposal passed in the Republican-led Senate on Wednesday by a 35-1 vote is a second attempt at distributing the federal money awarded to Michigan schools earlier this year.
Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm vetoed a portion of a previous distribution plan in October.
The revised plan calls for giving the state's lowest-funded schools $222 more per pupil.
The highest-funded schools would get $111 more per pupil. Schools between the two extremes could get the federal money based on a sliding scale.
The House has approved a similar distribution.
The federal money helps offset other cuts approved for Michigan schools.
Republican Sen. Bruce Patterson of Wayne County's Canton Township was the only senator opposing the bill.
