College Student Gunned Down At FriendÂ?s Home 12-02-2010

SAGINAW, Mich. -- Officers in Saginaw are still investigating an early morning shooting that left one man dead.
The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday at an apartment near the corner of Hancock and North Bates streets.
The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Sean Stennett, a Saginaw resident who worked at a local cafe and attended Delta College.
Close friends of Stennett said he died a hero. They tell WNEM TV5 Stennett pushed a woman out of the way and stood in-front of the door -- blocking a room full of friends as someone fired eight bullets into the apartment.
Detective Sergeant Joe Dutoi said Stennett was hit several times. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
"I just really can't believe he's gone,” said Zachary Bellwood, the victim’s best friend. “I heard this morning [that] somebody got shot over at my friend’s house."
There’s no word right now on what may have triggered the violence.
This shooting marks the fourth homicide for the city of Saginaw in 2010, a significant decrease from the city’s 2009 number of 12.
"Any homicide is a tragedy and four is still too many," said Dutoi. "So we need to keep up the good work the police department has done and move forward."
Dutoi also credits the community as having a lot to do with the lower homicide rate.
"We've reached out to the community," Dutoi said. "We've asked them to take ownership, asked them to step up to the plate. We find witnesses are more cooperative at this point."
On Thursday night, those who were close with Stennett held a candlelight vigil to celebrate his life.
