Apartment Building Damaged By Fire; No Injuries 12-03-2010

Crews were called to an early-morning fire at a multiunit housing apartment in Saginaw Township Friday.
The building is located at 6130 Western Drive in the Gratiot West Condominiums.
Fire officials said the blaze began just after 5 a.m.
One apartment unit inside the building was destroyed, while two surrounding units sustained heavy water and smoke damage.
"I opened my bedroom door and I couldn't see a thing," said fire victim Dennis Markey."I grabbed my jeans, my coat and navigated my way to the patio door where they were screaming for me to get out and I hurdled over the railing. The entire place upstairs was engulfed."
"Our first arriving crews did encounter heavy fire on the second floor," Saginaw Township Fire Chief Jim Peterson said. "All of the residents did get out safely and no one was injured."
Fire investigators told TV5 reporter Liz Gelardi the fire was caused by a faulty stove.
The Saginaw County chapter of the American Red Cross was able to get in contact with some residents to provide emergency assistance in the form of food and clothing.
The Red Cross said, however, because of the time of the fire many residents were not in their home.
The organization said if your apartment was damaged but were not contacted by the American Red Cross please call 989-754-8181.
