Several New Speed Limits Posted Along M-13 12-06-2010

The Michigan Department of Transportation installed new speed limit signs along a six-mile-stretch of M-13 from just south of the city of Saginaw north to Veterans Memorial Parkway in Saginaw County.
All new signs along the route were scheduled to be posted by Friday, Dec. 3.
The location of the new speed limits on M-13 are as follows:
  1. 55 mph south of the city of Saginaw
  2. 50 mph from the city limits to Washington Avenue
  3. 40 mph from Washington Avenue to Janes Street
  4. 30 mph from Janes Street to north of Johnson Street
  5. 50 mph from north of Johnson Street to Veterans Memorial Parkway

Officials said the speed limit increase is the result of a multiyear review of the corridor by MDOT and the Michigan State Police. MDOT and MSP regularly conduct speed limit studies to determine and recommend the safest speed limit for state roadways.
"Setting realistic speed limits is important to providing a smooth and safe flow of traffic," said Gregg Brunner, MDOT Bay City Transportation Service Center manager, "and a major factor in preventing crashes on Michigan highways."
According to Brunner, Michigan traffic studies confirm that matching speed limits to actual driving speeds creates safer roads by cutting down on aggressive driving and sudden lane changes that occur when drivers encounter slower-moving vehicles.
"The updated speed limits will reduce the number of posted speed limit changes along M-13," said Brunner. "This will keep the majority of traffic moving at the same speed."
Engineering factors were considered, including intersection sight distance, roadway geometry and crash history.
"A change like this requires clear communication with local agencies," Brunner said. "The new speed limits were reviewed and accepted by the city of Saginaw prior to making changes."
Saginaw County residents with questions or concerns may call the Bay City Transportation Service Center at 989-671-1555.
