Tugboat Sinks, Becomes Encased In River Ice 12-14-2010

The Coast Guard is attempting to salvage a 65-foot tugboat that sank and became encased in ice late Sunday night in the Saginaw River.
Coast Guard and local fire department responders are working with representatives from the company that owns the boat named -- Ann Marie.
All that's visible of the boat from the surface is a few radio antennas and the ship's radar.
“No one knows [how she went down],” said Gene Suuppi, with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. “I guess it was underwater Monday morning when everybody came to work.”
The working tug is about 50 years old and right now the main concern surrounds the ship leaking diesel fuel into the water.
“The biggest problem here isn't the Ann Marie at the bottom, it's her diesel fuel rising to the surface,” said Suuppi.
It has about 800 gallons of diesel oil on board and divers are attempting to remove the contamination threat.
If all goes according to plan, the salvage crew hopes to have the ship returned to the surface by the end of the week.
