Make A Child's Christmas Brighter: Donate A Toy 12-20-2010

The last-minute Toys-for-Tots push is going on right now in Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties.
"I can always use more toys,” said Bay County program coordinator Jeff Jarvis.
Sure, it looks like there are more than enough toys at the Toys for Tots headquarters in Bay City, but looks can be deceiving.
There are a lot of little ones in need this Christmas, and you can help make Dec. 25 brighter, especially for toddlers who are 2 years old and younger, and older kids, who 11 and 12 years old.
"For the older kids, [they want] mp3 players, CD players, that type of electronic item, they just absolutely love those,” said Jarvis. “Those are the types of things we look for for the older kids. For the younger [kids], they've got your blocks, your toy cars and trucks for the boys, and dolls for the girls."
The volunteers have been busy, and thanks to recent donations, they've spent about $18,000 on new toys. Most of that money was doled out to local stores to help the economy here.
The program is really taking off this year, and one of the volunteers explained why she's so excited to be a part of it.
"it means everything to me,” said volunteer Krystyn Becker. “Being a single parent myself, for the longest time, I benefitted from the Toys for Tots program, so this is my way to be able to give back and help the other children so they can have a Christmas like my children were able to have when they were younger."
The volunteers will accept those donations at the Bay City Mall food court or the Bay County headquarters until Tuesday evening. They'll then give out the toys to parents on Wednesday. And they'll be helping out quite a few clients.
"We're going to be serving pretty close to 3,000 children this year,” said Jarvis.
WNEM TV5 is a proud sponsor of Toys for Tots and the station is taking donations for the program in our lobby at 107 N. Franklin in Saginaw.
