Gas Bandit Arrested; Accused Of 16 Drive-Offs 12-28-2010

After being on the run for more than a year, Mount Pleasant police said they have arrested a man accused of filling up his gas tank numerous times without paying for it.
Benjamin Williams, 28, of Mount Pleasant was taken into police custody Thursday after a Citgo gas station manager recognized his vehicle from prior gas larcenies at her business.
Police said Williams fled the scene in his vehicle at a high rate of speed after the manager approached him.
Police said Williams returned to the area and watched officers process the crime scene from a distance. Williams was attempting to leave the area when an officer initiated a traffic stop. He was taken into custody without incident and held at the Isabella County Sheriff Department.
Police said information received from witnesses was instrumental in the arrest.
Police said Williams is believed to be involved with about 16 other gas larcenies. Williams used six different stolen license plates and three separate vehicles to commit these crimes, according to police.
Investigators estimate that Williams stole nearly $700 in gas over the course of the year.
He has been charged with one count of robbery-unarmed, one count of larceny of gas and one count of assault and battery,
Williams was released on a $20,000 bond.
