Bay Ice Melts As Temps Hover Near 50 Degrees 12-31-2010

The warm weather following Thursday’s freezing rain is doing nothing to deter local ice fisherman from heading out to their shanties.
Friday morning, however, the U.S. Coast Guard issued a warning to fishermen to stay off the ice.
“We were out there today on airboats, [there’s] a lot of cracking, there is no safe ice,” said an official with the Coast Guard.
Seems like every year the Coast Guard warns people to stay off the ice on the Saginaw Bay, and it seems like every year those warnings are ignored.
If you do go out on the ice, the Coast Guard wants you to think of "ice,” or I-C-E. I for intelligence, meaning be smart and don't go out alone. C for clothing that prevents hypothermia and a life jacket. E is for equipment like ice picks to pull yourself out if you fall in, and a cell phone to call for help.
With temperatures that are expected to flirt with 50 degrees on Friday and part of Saturday, the ice will be melting quickly on the bay.
The Saginaw River Coast Guard Station said it has yet to field any emergency calls of someone falling through the ice.
