Snyder Era Begins With Michigan Inauguration 1-01-2011

Former computer executive Rick Snyder has become Michigan's 48th governor, taking charge of a state starving for a turnaround after years of economic distress.
Shortly after noon Saturday, Snyder took the oath of office from Marilyn Kelly, chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court.
The Republican follows Democrat Jennifer Granholm, who served for eight years.
The inauguration was held on the Capitol steps in Lansing. Snyder talked about teamwork and his plans to "reinvent" Michigan during his speech.
Snyder is a former Gateway computer executive from the Ann Arbor area who had never run for public office before winning the governor's race. He defeated Democrat Virg Bernero in the general election.
Snyder had plenty of company outside the state Capitol as he was sworn in as Michigan's next governor.
Many other Michigan officials elected to statewide offices were sworn in at noon Saturday.
Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and Attorney General Bill Schuette have been sworn into office.
The three Republicans took their oaths of office moments after Snyder was sworn in.
Justices Robert Young and Mary Beth Kelly were sworn in, as were members of the state Board of Education and the boards of Michigan State University, Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.
Eight Court of Appeals judges also took their oaths of office.
