No Snow = No Sales For Many Local Businesses 1-10-2011

While Mid-Michigan is expecting a new round of snowfall, the region is falling behind in the yearly average rate.
And when Mid-Michigan is short on snow, local businesses are short on people willing to spend big money on wintertime fun.
Riders Powersports in Saginaw Township counts on the snow each year to bring in its winter customers.
"We had a very good December selling coats, boots and helmets, that kind of thing, but it's difficult right now," said store owner Brian McMahan.
TV5 Meteorologist Catherine Bodak said the region is below normal by about 4 to 4.5 inches of snow compared to a typical winter season.
Bodak said the mild start to January did not help with any significant snow accumulation.
"There's not a lot of places you can go. The trails that are being used don't have the normal frozen base underneath," said McMahan. "You need a good solid base of snow that builds up and melts a little bit and freezes. We have not had that base this year."
Bodak said Mid-Michigan now needs about 6 inches of new snow accumulation. "You can't sell stuff if they don't ride," said McMahan.
Hopefully, the snow will soon make its comeback for all winter weather enthusiasts.
Bodak said Northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula did get a round of snow over this past weekend.
