Commission Puts Off Vote On 'Risque' Restaurant 1-10-2011

The discussion was short Monday night for a controversial restaurant that could open in Saginaw Township.
The township's planning commission briefly debated whether or not they'll try to keep Tini Bikini's Bar & Grill from opening.
But Community leaders have already put up the red flag, saying the restaurant is not welcome at the proposed location because it promotes scantily clad entertainers and pole dancing.
No decision was reached at the Monday night meeting.
A group of business developers for Tini Bikini's Bar & Grill, planned to open in the former RJ’s Grill & Brew, 3140 Bay Road but hit its first roadblock in September when the Township Board of Trustees denied the transfer of a liquor license from the old business.
Assistant Township Manager Rob Grose said in September that zoning rules would allow the business to open in other spots in the township, but Tini Bikini's couldn’t operate in the former RJ’s site because an adult entertainment business ordinance prohibits those types of businesses to be near a school, residential neighborhood or church.

In this case, the desired location is within 1,000 feet of Mackinaw Academy on Shattuck Road, the former Plainfield Elementary School location.
"We saw women scantly dressed, although they had their breasts and buttocks somewhat covered, they performed pole and lap dancing," Grose told WNEM TV5 four months ago. "In our opinion, it's a gentleman's club."
Officials representing Tini Bikini's disagree, saying no topless activity occurs within the restaurant, so any adult-entertainment ordinance or regulations should not apply.
Attorney David Drapper said he will take the matter to court and warned the process would cost cash-strapped Saginaw Township a lot of money.
The company already has one location in Grand Rapids and plans to open in Jackson and Lansing too.
