Board Chairman Issues Gag Rule On Top Official 1-13-2011

A top county administrator has been silenced after Saginaw County Board of Commissioners Chairman Michael O’Hare imposed a gag order.
According to the Saginaw News, O’Hare initially ordered the gag rule for County Controller and Chief Administrative Officer Marc A. McGill. It was an effort to keep him from talking about a countywide tax proposal that could have an impact on public safety.
But not everyone on the board was in agreement with the chairman.
Some commissioners expressed concern saying, “Our business is the business of the public. The taxpayers have a right to know what we’re doing,” according to the report.
O’Hare eventually urged members of the media to first talk with commissioners on the board before going to the county controller when it comes to proposals dealing with raising taxes or cuts in services.
Commissioners usually meet once a month in board and committee meetings.
