County Leader Offers $1M Budget Trimming Plan 1-13-2011

A top county administrator said Saginaw County will have to cut 15 jobs, end county commissioners’ fringe benefits and freeze their next pay term if it plans to cut $1.2 million from its spending.
County Controller and Chief Administrative Officer Marc A. McGill recently recommended the plan to the County Board of Commissioners.
Citizens would also consider whether to pay a 1-mill law enforcement levy.
The proposal said cuts would fall across 12 county departments. The plan also suggests combining the county clerk’s and the Register of Deeds offices to save $100,000 a year.
County leaders will have to make a decision before Feb. 22 in order to get the issue on the May 3 ballot.
Board Chairman Michael O'Hare imposed a gag rule on McGill from speaking about the proposal publicly before the committee reviewed the plan.
