Alarming Report Challenges State MEAP Tests 1-13-2011

A new report out Thursday from a national education reform group raises doubts about the viability of Michigan Michigan Educational Assessment Program tests administered to students statewide.
According to The Education Trust-Midwest, an education think tank, Michigan must reverse its “shockingly low performance rate for schools, colleges and universities.”
The group said more than 80 percent of parents of fourth-graders are told by the state that their children are proficient in reading (based on the MEAPs), but that only 30 percent of those same students scored proficient on the national reading exam.
The study raises questions about whether the MEAP standards are too low and put the state's students at a national disadvantage.
