New Wintry Mess Covers Entire TV5 Viewing Area 1-16-2011

A storm packing a mix of snow, sleet and ice has created near-blizzard conditions and hazardous roadways in parts of Michigan.
The National Weather Service says up to eight inches of snow fell in the Saginaw Bay area by late Wednesday morning. The Flint area got a mix of sleet and snow. Some portions of the northern Lower Peninsula got a foot of snow.
"Our late March snow and ice storm will linger most of today," TV5 Meteorologist Mike Cameron said. "During the rest of the morning, slightly colder air will help to transition the mix to mainly snow, especially for the Tri-Cities area. It will likely take longer to see the mixed precipitation to switch to all snow along I-69, with the transition expected there in the early afternoon."
By Wednesday afternoon, forecasters say an area from Ludington to Mount Pleasant could get 5-10 inches of snow and sleet by the time the storm passes. The weather service has also issued gale warnings for Lake Superior, saying it could see waves higher than 25 feet.
Highest snow totals were north of the Tri-Cities and over the northern Thumb -- where some spots will have recorded more than a foot of snow.
School closings included Central Michigan University, the University of Michigan-Flint, Delta College and Saginaw Valley State University.
Consumers Energy said that about 26,000 of its customers lost power during the storm. DTE Energy Co. reports no major outages.
Detailed First Warn 5 Forecast:
Today: Snow, possibly mixed with sleet, becoming all snow after 2pm. The snow could be heavy at times. Some thunder is also possible. Temperature falling to around 26 by 5pm. Blustery, with a east northeast wind around 21 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.
Tonight: Snow likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 16. Blustery, with a northeast wind between 15 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.
Thursday: A chance of flurries. Partly sunny, with a high near 29. North northwest wind between 9 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.
