Driver Escapes Injury After Semi Lands On Car 1-18-2011

Bad weather and road conditions were blamed for a crash between a tractor-trailer and another vehicle early Tuesday morning in Genesee County.
It happened around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Interstate 75 in Vienna Township at Lake Road south of the Birch Run exit.
Police said the car slid on a patch of ice and into the path of the tractor-trailer.
Clio-area Fire Chief Gary Domerese has seen many accidents, but he can't believe both drivers walked away from this one.
“It’s my understanding that the car spun out ahead of the semi, struck the median wall, bounced across and the semi was trying to dodge him. They got together and both of them went into the ditch,” said Domerese.
Domerese said the driver was trapped in his car under the semi but he managed to call 911.
“It took us about an hour to get the heavy wreckers on scene to lift the back of the truck up so we could pull the vehicle out from underneath the truck,” said Domerese.
Medics took both drivers to the hospital. Domerese said the semi driver was not injured.
The man whose car was trapped under the semi only had minor injuries.
The crash caused a three-mile backup that lasted for throughout the morning. Traffic was back to normal by mid-afternoon.
Domerse wants drivers to remember the crash. “You just got to be careful, slow down, take your time,” Domerse said. “Don't be in a big rush to get where you're going on a day like today.”
Officials at the scene said the tractor-trailer was transporting sugar.
