Fire Stations Facing Closure Granted Reprieve 1-21-2011

Flint residents will be glad to know a couple of fire stations won’t be closing after all.
Two fire stations slated to shut down this weekend will stay open.
The stations were going to be shut down if supervisor demotions went into effect, because there wouldn't be enough qualified personnel on hand to keep the stations open.
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling said the fire department needs to cut about $500,000 from its budget.
The firefighter’s union has proposed a "brown out" that would close different stations on alternating days in an effort to save money.
“We did have a meeting with the mayor,” said Raul Garcia, president of the firefighter’s union. “I believe he understands it, and understands it will save money, and we don't have to close these stations.”
The union said it will continue to meet with city officials and figure out some cost-saving measures.
