Proposed Gun Legislation Divides Mid-Michigan 1-26-2011

Legislation proposed in the Michigan House has people in the region talking about guns and where concealed pistol licensees can -- and cannot -- carry their firearms.
Two Michigan lawmakers want to lift the restrictions on where residents with the proper licenses can carry concealed weapons.
The plans are generating a lot of comment online across several Mid-Michigan media outlets.
Republican state Sen. Mike Green of Mayville on Tuesday introduced legislation that would repeal so-called "no carry" zones at sports stadiums, schools, churches, hospitals and casinos.
“What’s wrong with allowing honest, trained law-abiding citizens that are just there to protect themselves, why shouldn’t we let someone like that in a school, in a church and these other facilities?” said Green. “It’s about a Constitutional right.”
Vote: Should concealed weapon permit holders be allowed to carry in current gun-free zones?
The legislation comes on the heels of another House bill introduced by state Rep. Richard LeBlanc, a Democrat from northern Michigan. That legislation is HB 4009 and was introduced Jan. 13.
Some similar proposals have been introduced in recent years but haven't passed the Legislature.
Green's bill also would get rid of local gun licensing boards. The secretary of state's office would take over permits for concealed weapons.
State law related to who can get concealed weapons permits would not change under either proposal. Those applying for the permit are required to submit to a background search, fingerprinting and eight hours of classes.
Those against the expansion of the law say only law enforcement officials should be armed while in the locations currently off limits to concealed pistol license holders.
“There’s so much violence in the world, it’s not a smart idea, we got to get rid of guns, not have more laws for people to use them,” said Saginaw resident Matt Reis.
Those in support of the law say criminals don't respect gun-free zones, so why should people who could carry remain unarmed in the face of a threat?
So what do you think? Should law-abiding people who carry concealed weapons be allowed to do so inside current gun-free zones? Comment on TV5's Facebook page.
