CityÂ?s Plans For Dog Ordinance Move Forward 2-08-2011

Saginaw city leaders continue to move forward with plans for a dangerous dog ordinance.
The city has been working on it for almost a year, and on Monday night the City Council got barked at by some dog advocates. The loose coalition of dog owners said they’re worried the dog ordinance will be breed-specific.
“The ones that are going to pay the costs are the ones that are already legal,” said Sunday Miles. “They license their dogs; they train them and take care of them. It is these other people letting them run loose that are causing the problem.”
But council members assured those in attendance some provisions to the plan have already been made or removed and urged residents to be patient until the ordinance is finished before deciding if they oppose it.
Current licensing fees for dogs will remain intact, but the new rules would impose a $50 one-time fee for anyone who owns a dog on the city's list. Anyone not paying the $50 could face a civil infraction fine set by a judge.
