Sheriff Says Heroin Use Becoming Troublesome 2-11-2011

A sharp increase in heroin abuse has a local sheriff speaking out.
Midland County Sheriff Jerry Nielsen said the spike has happened over the last year, and he’s blaming the area’s crackdown on prescription drug abuse.
Nielsen points to the county’s two-year effort to get the popular Oxycontin pill off the streets.
"Basically what they're doing is getting heroin for the fix,” he said “It’s easier than the pills and it's cheaper.''
Heroin overdoses are also on the upswing in the county. Nielsen said at least three heroin addicts are booked in the county jail every week.
Abusers are generally between the ages of 18 and 25, according to Nielsen.
