No Injuries Reported In Chemical Fire Near HSC 2-11-2011

Dow Corning and Thomas Township fire officials are investigating a fire that resulted from the release of a silicon-based material manufactured at a facility next to the Hemlock Semiconductor site in Saginaw County.
Dow Corning spokeswoman Leslie Orozco said Friday in an e-mail that the fire is under control. A chemical process at HSC ran into trouble so they are burning off the chemicals in a stack for safety reasons.
She said the material burns and sends off dust particles similar to beach sand when it mixes with air and that workers at the facility and residents living nearby were not in danger. No injuries have been reported.
The fire and smoke were visible outside the facility, about eight miles west of Saginaw.
Hemlock Semiconductor is a joint venture of Dow Corning Corp. and two Japanese companies. It makes polycrystalline silicon for solar cells.
