Fleeing Shoplifter Pepper Sprays Walmart Staff 2-16-2011

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department was called to an incident at a Walmart on Tuesday evening.
Members of the store’s loss prevention team said they observed a man putting items in his pants pockets, as well as inside his pants.
The team told police the man also picked up a few items that he did end up paying for.
Deputies said as he was walking out of the store, a couple of loss prevention members approached him and asked him to give them the items that he hid in his pants and did not pay for.
“He told them he didn’t have any items he didn’t pay for,” said Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski in a news release. “The next thing they know, he pulls out an item from his pocket and begins spraying them with some sort of liquid.”
Mioduszewski said they yelled for help and several other Walmart employees came to assist them. Two other employees were also sprayed with the same liquid, police said.
Authorities said it was later determined the man had been spraying a canister of pepper spray at the employees.
Mioduszewski said the shoplifter was finally taken to the ground by Walmart employees and a customer. Police said he was held on the ground until sheriff’s deputies arrived and it was determined he had $78 worth of items on him that he didn’t pay for.
Late Wednesday afternoon, the sheriff said 47-year-old Jeff Lynn Graham, of Shepherd, was arraigned on unarmed robbery, assault and retail fraud charges.
Graham is being held at the Isabella County Jail on $21,000 bail.
