Whitmer: Budget Plan Puts Load On Seniors 2-17-2011

Michigan Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer says Gov. Rick Snyder's budget plan appears to put a big burden on kids and senior citizens to help fund business tax cuts.
Whitmer, of East Lansing, says Thursday morning that based on details already released it appears "traditional winners and losers" are being picked. The Republican governor presents the plan to lawmakers Thursday. Whitmer says she hopes the plan includes enough detail.
Michigan has the nation's most generous tax credits for seniors, and the governor's proposal calls for eliminating the exemption on their pensions. The plan also would cut spending for public schools. It would give businesses a $1.8 billion tax break.
Snyder is asking for shared sacrifice as he seeks to make up a $1.4 billion budget gap with the budget overhaul.
