Man, 27, Arrested In Assault Case Involving Baby 2-25-2011

Authorities say a 27-year-old Bay County man has been arrested in a 2010 sexual assault and abuse case involving a young child who was taken to an emergency room for treatment.
Mark Townsend, of Bay City, was arraigned Thursday on several charges including criminal sexual conduct, child abuse and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
Authorities in March were contacted by doctors at Bay Regional Medical Center after an 11-month old girl was brought to the emergency room.
Authorities said the incident occurred in Monitor Township when Townsend was babysitting.
Townsend remains in police custody and has a court date set for March 10.
Townsend works for the Bangor School District as a support staff member. Superintendent Shawn Bishop said Townsend's job is to supervise students in detention. Townsend began coaching for the district in 2005 before becoming a school aid in 2007.
Bishop told TV5 he and his staff were "shocked and surprised" when they learned of Townsend's arrest. Bishop said they didn't "see anything like this coming."
