Michigan Works! Could See Budget Slashed 3-01-2011

Michigan Works! helps people down on their luck land a job, but now it's in danger of closing.
Michigan Works! would be forced to close if the U.S. Senate passes a budget already approved by the U.S. House.
So what does that mean for people who need help finding work? People TV5 spoke with are very worried Michigan Works! will close. They said there really is no other agency that can fill the void, no “plan B” for them.
According to the Lansing State Journal, the budget legislation approved by the House would cut more than $3.5 billion from the Workforce Investment Act after July 1. That act accounts for a huge chunk of Michigan Works! budget.
Thousands visit Michigan Works! every day to look for jobs, meet with career counselors and enroll in job training. Businesses also use Michigan Works! to find qualified workers.
This isn't a done deal yet. The U.S. House and Senate are debating a full budget bill and have passed a two-week budget extension. But, billions of dollars in spending and cuts are still being negotiated.
