Davenport University Set To Close 3 Campuses 3-17-2011

The president of Davenport University says the Grand Rapids-based institution is closing three of its 14 Michigan campuses and expanding operations elsewhere.
Davenport will close the Alma, Caro and Gaylord campuses in May of 2012. Officials with the private, nonprofit university focusing on business, technology and health say about 250 students are affected by the closings.
The university is also planning to renovate or construct new campus facilities in Lansing, expand nursing labs in Midland and Saginaw, and launch new academic programs.
“We’ve experienced unprecedented growth these past few years,” said Davenport President Dr. Richard J. Pappas. “These decisions are about increasing our ability to grow within the markets we serve, not about reducing expenses or downsizing.”
Alma students will be encouraged to continue studies at Davenport’s Midland or Lansing campuses and Caro students will be encouraged to go to the Midland or Saginaw campuses. Gaylord students will be serviced at Davenport’s Traverse City location.
Most courses offered by the college are available online, according to school officials.
Twenty-six full and part-time employees will also be affected by these changes.
