Saginaw Co. Parks Gear Up For Summer Season 3-17-2011

With the mild conditions we've seen across the area, it's not hard to believe spring is almost here in Mid-Michigan.
In just a few weeks, people will be enjoying some fun in the sun and Stephanie Wirtz and the Saginaw Parks and Recreation Commission are hard at work preparing for this upcoming spring and summer seasons.
“We have a lot of things we have to do,” said Wirtz, outdoor recreation and events coordinator. “We have some snow fences we have to take down and we have some trails we are fixing up. We are getting ready to work on some big projects."
Because of all the work that needs to be done to complete the winter to spring transition, they have recruited some extra hands to make sure the parks are ready for the variety of activities which will take place during the busy season.
“Actually, right now what we have is a skeleton staff until the middle and end of May, where our summer staff comes on and they usually help us get the majority of the parks ready,” explained Wirtz.
The spring and summer seasons are the busiest for William H. Haithco Park in Saginaw. And in just a few weeks, people will be enjoying the outdoor activities that all the Saginaw County parks have to offer.
“We actually have a lot of events coming up,” said Wirtz. “We've got some geo-caching, some photo nature hikes, we have kayaking in the summer [and] we have some regular hikes and biking events.”
Wirtz said that the main goal is to get people out to enjoy themselves and enjoy the weather.
“Come on out and enjoy the parks. We have a lot going on and a little bit for everyone,” said Wirtz.
