Up, Down, Up, Down -- Gas Prices Go Up, Again 3-18-2011

Once again, TV5 is getting word from viewers that gas prices across the region have shot up to about $3.65, up 20 cents.
TV5 Facebook fans report filling stations along Tittabawassee Road in Saginaw and Bay City stations have also raised their prices.
Debra Harris wrote on TV5's Facebook Wall, "Drove to Kroger on State Street in Saginaw and the price was 3.45.....drove back home an hour later and was 3.65....ridiculous!"
Shay Luptowski wrote around 1 p.m., "I just waited in line at the Admiral on Saginaw Rd in Midland, it was $3.39. The Shell, a block before it was already up to $3.65."
The swing is mostly due to the see-sawing of crude oil prices due to unrest in Libya and other Middle East countries.
Oil plunged following the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan last week. Experts say Japan's short-term use of oil has been curtailed due to the devastation in much of the northern section of the country.
Meanwhile, the House Energy and Technology Committee held a public hearing Tuesday on the rise of gas prices in the state.
Officials discussed how gas prices are established, what residents can expect in the coming months and how consumers can protect themselves if they believe they are being taken advantage of at the pump.
The committee was joined by representatives from the Michigan Petroleum Association, Michigan Public Service Commission, and the state attorney general's office.
