Medical Prescription Fraud Case Spans Years 3-24-2011

New information has been released by Michigan State police regarding the investigation of a Bay City woman who was arrested on suspicion of acquiring fraudulent medical prescriptions over the past several years.
Michelle Clarey, 49, was arrested last week on identity theft, possession of prescription forms and two fugitive criminal bench warrants after investigators claim she obtained access to some doctors’ names and Drug Enforcement Agency numbers and had been using them to acquire medical prescriptions from June 2006 through March 2011.
Police said the investigation has now revealed that 12 Bay County pharmacies were targeted and five physician names were forged on an estimated 170 fraudulent prescriptions. Investigators said Clarey got access to the doctor's identifying numbers through her job.
She’s accused of obtaining drugs like Soma, codeine and Vicodin.
Police said the follow-up investigation has been sent to the prosecutor’s office for review and consideration for additional criminal charges.
