Local District Closing For Playoff Game, Logistics 3-24-2011

The Bay City Western High School basketball team is heading to East Lansing for an MHSAA semifinal game Friday -- and as a result district officials have decided to close all schools.
On Wednesday, officials said the decision to close the schools was due in part to the game and “an anticipation of not having high enough students in class on the last day before spring break and an insufficient number of substitute teachers throughout the district.”
According to the news release issued by the district, officials anticipated not having the 75 percent student attendance that is required by the state in order to receive aid.
The release states, “We would lose the revenue and if we proceeded with school and the day did not count, we could not only lose the revenue, but would pay for operating costs for a day that would not count.”
Western is scheduled to play Detroit Southeastern at the Breslin Center at 2:50 p.m.
“We are very proud of our Western boy’s varsity basketball team; however, the reason for this special circumstance of closure is not about basketball, but about logistics,” the release said.
