Senior Project Aims To Benefit Overseas Soldiers 3-29-2011

A Mid-Michigan teenager has a lofty goal for her senior high school project.
The Carrollton High School senior wants to raise thousands of dollars to buy items for troops serving overseas.
"I didn't think this many people would buy this many shirts and support him the way they do," said 17-year-old Haley Robinson.
Robinson wants you to buy the shirt off her back. Well, maybe not the exact shirt she's wearing, but a T-shirt she designed as part of her senior project. Her brother was the inspiration behind her idea. Brad Saxton, 20, serves in Afghanistan and he was recently wounded and suffered a back injury.
"The stories he tells me [about what] goes on there makes me support them and help out as much as I can," said Robinson.
Robinson has also sold candy bars and cupcakes to raise money for Soldiers Angels, an organization that sends care packages to Americans serving overseas.
"On the back it says 'all gave some, some gave all,' because it's my brother's tattoo. He got it for one of his sergeants who passed away over there."
Robinson’s project gets a big thumbs up from school officials who are really proud of her.
"Sincere pride, sincere pride, I mean, she's a self-starter, she's got a passion for the project, and what a creative way to go about trying to raise a helping hand," said Dr. Craig Douglas, Carrollton schools superintendent.
Robinson’s goal is to raise $5,000 to turn over to Soldiers Angels. She said the project also means a lot to her brother.
"When I told him, he thought “wow,” that brought a tear to my eye, he thought it was a real good thing that I’m doing because I’m basing my whole project on him."
The shirts are selling for $13 and anyone wanting to purchase one can do so by calling Carrollton High School at 989-753-3433.
